من أهم مبادئه: أن التفسير يختلف باختلاف الشخص — فالثعبان في حلم رجل تاجر يختلف تفسيره عن ثعبان في حلم رجل حاكم. والحلم الواحد لشخصين مختلفين قد يحمل معنيين متضادين.
من أشهر قواعد ابن سيرين: "لا تقص رؤياك إلا على من تحب" — لأن الرؤيا تتفسر على يد المعبّر، فإن كان محباً أوّلها خيراً، وإن كان حاقداً أوّلها شراً. وهذه القاعدة أثبتتها الدراسات النفسية الحديثة تحت مسمى "Self-fulfilling prophecy".
